Arabs and Ottomans in Europe - Europeans in the Middle East: Pictures of the Self and Imaginations of the Other in 19th and 20th century travelogues

Travelogues are documents and historical sources of cultural contact at the same time. They tell us about stasis and change in the perception and imagination of the 'Self' and the 'Other'. By relating the 'Self' to the 'Other', they inform us about the observer, his ideas and stereotypes. The travelogues reinforce these ideas as the influence the future perception of other travelers. Therefore they are historical sources with an influence stretching to the present.

Following these observations, my research project compares selected Ottoman-Turkish, Arabic and European travelogues of the 19th and 20th centuries. In this period we witness the development of the crucial pictures of the "European"- and the "Oriental Self" prevailing until today. Certain dichotomies are created and reinforced and we can observe a quiet stable set of prejudices regarding the West as we can find in Western Orientalism. But this period is characterized by literary, cultural and political entanglements and by an expansion of travel in both directions. Supposed geographical, cultural and literary boundaries reveal themselves to be porous when we consider travelogues as documents of border crossings. Through a comparative synchronical and diachronical reading of selected travelogues the project aims to analyse them as documents of a self-positioning, self-fashioning, self-referentiality and a source of demarcation between the 'Self' and the 'Other' . The comparison should show similarities in the descriptive techniques as well as the objects of the description and give an inside into the dynamics of this genre as well as the continuity and change of the pictures of the 'Self' and imaginations of the 'Other'.

Currently there exist no studies comparing European travelogues with 'oriental' ones, nor Ottoman-Turkish with Arabic ones. And yet a comparative examination is a pressing requirement, as the comparison allows us to observe oriental travelogues within the framework of comparative literature und understand them as specific documents of a transcultural process of the experience of the 'Other'. The comparative study can question received literary and civilisation boundaries between 'Europe', the 'Arab World' and the 'Ottoman-Turkish Culture'. The genre itself turns out not to be monolithic, it is subject to both socio-political and literary contexts and the developments in these areas. Supposed geographical, cultural and literary boundaries reveal themselves to be porous when we consider travelogues as documents of border crossings.

Through theoretically funded analysis literary techniques, psychological and sociological mechanisms, constructing the 'Self' and the 'Other' should be detected to develop a theoretical tool being able to be employed for other genres and eras as well.
