Ghanaian Migrants in Germany and the Status Paradox of Migration. Social Status, Identity and Religion in Transnational Social Fields. Ghana has become one of the leading African countries of migration to Western Europe and North America over the last 40 years. This first part of the study examines the history and structures of transnational migration of Ghanaians to Germany. It is argued that the simultaneous incorporation of the migrants into different nation-states often results in a transnational status inconsistency, which is called status paradox of migration: the gaining of status and prestige in Ghana is achieved by losing it in Western Europe. Migrants are often able to produce evidence of a middle class status in Ghana with money they earned in working class jobs in Germany. The second part of the thesis examines social means of managing the described transnational form of status inconsistency. It is shown that the status paradox of migration manifests itself differently in the different nation-states involved and that, therefore, the migrants use different localized strategies for processing it.
