Exchange Marriages in a Pakistani Community

Sisters' and daughters' exchange for marriages is referred to as 'exchange marriages'. Thus, there are many forms of spouse selection, like exogamy, endogamy, arranges, love and exchange marriages in Pakistan. Researchers categorize exchange marriages into symmetrical (direct exchange) and asymmetrical (bride price). Blood compensation marriage (called vani) is another form of marriage to settle serious conflicts between tribal clans. Thus, different types of exchange marriages like the exchange of sisters, female cousins, nieces and daughters as spouses are considered to guarantee social security for marriage. Present study is aimed to document the existing practices of "Exchange Marriages in a Pakistani Community (Kabirwala)" and its links with gender roles and relationship. It will also highlight the relationship with broader 'social exchange theory' within cultural context and focus 'what is going on' regarding the exchange marriages practices. It will elaborate the objective (ideal culture) and subjective (real culture) of exchange marriages in the said community. Study will also concentrate the nonprevalence of exchange marriages among one ethnicity (like migrant Punjabi) that does not follow the same tradition; while living on the same place. Qualitative data will be collected from the married couples (who got marriage on the basis of exchange) and their parents. Local community leaders and social activist will also be studied to know the social structure. Case histories and life experiences of the respondents regarding the exchange marriages will be studied.
