Study Day: The ethics of culture - Invitation

What we would like to do is to discuss "global systems of reference", with a particular focus on the question of ethics and the problematic of universalism vs. relativism. We’ve decided to opt for a workshop format, so that we will (hopefully) have an in-depth discussion of one particular text and the specific questions that it addresses. The text we have chosen are two chapters from Seyla Benhabib’s "The Claims of Culture: Equality and Diversity in the Global Era" (2002). The text is available either through Stud-IP or as a hard copy in the secretariat of the OWZ in Mühlweg. We ask all of you to take notes of the major theses of and your own critical questions to the text. These will serve as the basis for our debate.

The session will be chaired by Prof. Matthias Kaufmann from the Institute of Philosophy. We will have short contributions from Prof. Richard Rottenburg as well as the post-docs from the various sections. The main part of the study day will be devoted to group discussions along a set of questions in relation to the text. Your input is, of course, essential! I will get back to you with more details by the middle of next week.
