Study Day: Translatability of philosophical and religious systems - Invitation

Our main topic of discussion will be the question whether philosophical and religious systems are translatable - not only from one language to another, but more important from one cultural and religious setting to another. This implies a more general question - namely, whether universals exist, that is whether philosophical or religious notions (soul, God, good-evil, etc.) are universals which every human being can understand and which can therefore be communicated by one person to another or not?

We would like to ask everybody to think about this question from the perspective of his or her field of interest.
In order to facilitate the approach to the issue in question we suggest the following texts:

  • Emmanuel Levinas, The Translation of the Scripture - available as a copy (Kopiervorlage) at the secretary of the OWZ and online at studip.uni-halle.de
  • Giuseppe Veltri, Philology versus Philosophy: A Critical Analysis of Levinas' Interpretation of "translatability" in his commentary on Bavli Megillah 8b-9b - available online at studip.uni-halle.de
  • You might also have a look at www.wikipedia.de   , entry "Bibelübersetzung"

On our Study Day we will provide some input for our discussion in form of four talks:

  • G. Veltri will give some introductory remarks and then present the approach of Emmanuel Levinas to translatability

To enrich our discussion with examples and illustrations, presentations of three case-studies will follow:

  • H. Franke: Sanskrit into Persian
  • E. Wakelnig: Greek into Arabic
  • W. Li: Philosophical exchange between China and Europe.
