The workshop deals with the authority of prophetic traditions in Islam during the first three centuries through its three fundamental aspects: Analysis of a text, analysis of chains of transmitters, and the geographic dimension of transmission. Christopher Melchert (Oxford) will give a seminar focused on some pages of Ibn Hanbal, kitâb al-Zuhd; secondly he will direct a working group with the analysis of chains of transmitters from Abd al-Razzâq, al-Musannaf and Ibn Abî Shayba, al-Musannaf. Asma Hilali will present a geographic map about the transmission of hadith during the first three centuries of Islam.
