Missionary Activities: Challenging Cultural and Religious Paradigms at Home and Abroad

Since the establishment of the first religious missions, missionary activities have often resulted in the spread of particular concepts and values. In terms of their specific spatial and temporal locations and their particular ideological backgrounds, missions intentionally seek to shape a certain kind of behavior according to assured cultural and religious paradigms. In doing so, the strategies, reports and reflections of missionaries offer an invaluable source and documentation of the constructions of cultural otherness and the different ways of dealing with them.

The workshop pursues to explore missionary activities of eastern and western religious institutions with a focus on the following three dimensions: I. Mission and Violence, II. Mission and Health, III. Mission and Knowledge.
