Overview
Indigenous-German Relations in Pennsylvania and Georgia
in the Second Half of the 18th Century
My dissertation project focuses on (self-)representations of and interactions between European settlers and American Indian populations before and during the Revolutionary period (1740-1790) in the mid-Atlantic region. Assuming that encounters in the (early) colonial period were neither one-sided, nor did they occur along a monolithic frontier, the mid-Atlantic region appears as a compendium of change and continuity that all the participating groups had a share in and contributed to. By looking at German-speaking Pietist communities and their ways of engaging with what they experienced as a ‘New World’, I seek to examine the impacts that Indigenous cultures had on these newcomers and to what extent we can speak of ‘indigenization’ as a collective phenomenon.
I am particularly interested in the process of knowledge in motion where landscape and gender is concerned with regard to Indigenous and Pietist communities. Therefore, the main focus is on the ways in which spirituality is derived from the land and the connection of land and gender, marking natural surroundings as gendered space. By contrasting and uncovering the entanglements of gendered spaces in metaphors and narratives, the project intends to explore and portray a landscape that involved a complex pattern of individual borders and the crossings thereof by various actors in the region of today´s Pennsylvania and Georgia in the second half of the 18th century.
