International Conference "Surviving genocide: On what remains and the possibility of representation"

The main tasks of the conference are to scrutinize the internationally acknowledged ways of dealing with the aftermath of genocides and to discuss new approaches to transmit or rather transform the survivors’ suffering, coping and their claims for recognition. We expect critical inquiry into the ways in which experiences of extermination are represented in the arts, mass media, law and episteme. Regardless of the different representational modes, all discourses translate acts of extermination into visual and verbal communication. Thus, the ways poetry, painting, drawing, photography, film, novel, academic writing, testimony and the discreet legal proceedings at the International Criminal Court deal with the aftermath of mass crimes may be examined. Within this context, the ramification of globally circulating modes of representation, power and gender relations, aspects of social insecurity, dominant political and historical narratives, ways of silencing and exclusion are of particular interest to us. As an outcome, we seek to investigate interdisciplinary approaches to the field in question and ask if they can contribute to more comprehensive and ethical ways in understanding the long lasting effects and the complexity of coming to terms with conflict-wracked pasts.

Zwang und Begehren ― Bildung und Postkoloniale Gerechtigkeit
Dem Literaturwissenschaftler Edward Said zufolge konnte eine Unterwerfung und nachhaltige Unterdrückung der kolonisierten Räume letztendlich nur gelingen, indem nicht nur mit Zwang regiert wurde, sondern auch in die Gefühls- und Begehrensstrukturen der Kolonisierten eingegriffen wurde. Anders als oft dargestellt wurde dafür nicht alles Wissen der kolonisierten Gemeinschaften gelöscht, sondern oft auch geschickt von Europa vereinnahmt.
Im Vortrag wird aufgezeigt, wir die ehemals Kolonisierten im Kampf um Selbstbestimmung und für eine kognitive Gerechtigkeit listig das schwere Erbe der Kolonialbildung zu subvertieren suchen. Unter anderem werden hierfür die Schriften des afroamerikanischen Intellektuellen W.E.B. Du Bois als auch der postkolonialen Theoretikerin Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, die sich intensiv mit der Frage von Dekolonisierung und Bildung auseinandergesetzt haben, befragt.

26.02.2014: In der Debatte über die nach 1945 aus Unrechtserfahrung entwickelten Menschenrechte wird oft die Frage aufgeworfen, ob diese Rechte einer ›ethischen Begründung‹ bedürfen. Moralische Ansprüche, die gegen die Verletzung dessen gerichtet sind, was aufgrund moralischer Intuitionen für das Gute und für Gerechtigkeit gehalten wird, haben zu ihrer Entstehung beigetragen. Doch ›die‹ Moral mit legitimem allgemeinen Geltungsanspruch gibt es in pluralistischen Gesellschaften nicht, wenn nicht in Gestalt allgemeinen gleichen Rechts. Deshalb kommt den positivierten Menschenrechten mit ihrer universellen, im Schutz der Menschenwürde gründenden Verbindlichkeit ihre heutige Bedeutung zu. Ihre rechtliche Geltung gründet in dem, was in Menschenrechtspakten ausgehandelt worden ist, und in den Weltrechtsprinzipien des ius cogens, des in allen Staaten geltenden ›zwingenden Rechts‹. Moralische Ansprüche werden in der Sphäre des zu Neutralität verpflichteten Staates politisch in positives Recht transformiert, sofern sie verallgemeinerbar sind. Die ›Aufladung‹ des Verfassungsrechts mit partikulären ethischen Meinungen oder philosophischen, etwa naturrechtlichen Spekulationen muss in der rechtsstaatlich verfassten Demokratie vermieden werden.
