Winter Term 2008/09

1.
work-in-progress-group (wip-group)

This group is conducted by the post-docs. The purpose of the WIP is to provide doctoral  students - including the affiliated students - with an opportunity to present their work  (even rough drafts) in a creative environment which promotes fruitful discussion. Dissertation  supervisors are encouraged to attend this group. The idea is to create a forum in which all  members of the Graduate School can come into dialogue with one another by means of the individual  research projects, shared cross-disciplinary methodologies as well as content -related and  systematic problems.

2.
SCM-study-group

This group is to be organized and carried out by the post-docs, and will focus upon particular  aspects of a broader concept that will be dealt with over the course of several semesters.  Initially, we will be dealing with "Connectivity and Translation across Regions and Disciplines."  The post-docs will draw upon their respective areas of expertise in order to facilitate an  understanding and establish points of connection between their areas of research, e.g. "Orientalism,"  "Post-colonialism," "Translation," or "Theory of Praxis" and the texts under discussion. Over the  course of the first few semesters, an emphasis will be placed on the so-called "Actor-Network-Theory,"  perhaps lesser as a theory than as a methodological orientation focusing above all on concrete topics and  questions.  The SCM-study-group should, on the one hand, establish independent and systematic impulses,  and on the other, be open to and incorporate the needs identified within the WIP-group. Furthermore,  the short-term plans call for the development of a curriculum comprised of independent, yet,  conceptually related seminars. The SCM-study-group is open to affiliated doctoral students.
